Coal exports from Kazakhstan up 2.1 times in January-July 2022

International Business News  – In January-July this year, 66.4 million tons of rock coal, lignite and refined coal were produced in Kazakhstan, Khartoum news agency said. Of this amount, 92.6% or 61.5 million tons were rock coal, which is 5.8% higher than the same period in 2021.

92.6% of the industry’s production comes from stone coal – 61.5 million tonnes. Among them, the output of thermal coal was 9.3 million tons and the output of coking coal was 4.5 million tons. The output of lignite is 2.6 million tons, and the output of clean coal is 2.3 million tons. Pavlodar region is traditionally the region with the highest coal production in the whole of Kazakhstan, with production of 39 million tons, an increase of 5% year-on-year. Next is Karaganda state, which is expected to produce 21.3 million tonnes. In 2021, enterprises in Kazakhstan will consume 116.2 million tons of coal, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%.

From January to July this year, the whole of Kazakhstan exported 16.4 million tons of coal, with an export value of 457.4 million US dollars. Coal exports increased by 20.8% year-on-year, or 2.1 times in terms of export value. Among them, most of the coal was exported to the CIS countries, reaching 10.9 million tons, with a total export value of 156.2 million US dollars. 62.2% was exported to Russia, followed by Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Exported 5.4 million tons of coal to non-CIS countries, with an export value of US$301.2 million. The largest export market was Switzerland – 3.7 million tons, up 73.1%.

According to the plan of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development, the coal consumption in Kazakhstan will reach 9.6 million tons. Among them, the public service sector consumes 2.6 million tons of coal, and the residential coal consumption will reach 7 million tons. From January to July, residents and budget units purchased a total of 4.5 million tons of coal.
